Mayor Kasim Reed lashes out at les­bian may­oral can­di­date

At­lanta Mayor Kasim Reed had harsh words for may­oral can­di­date Cathy Woolard in re­sponse to her crit­i­cism of his use of emer­gency lights and sirens and his de­ci­sion to use nearly $150 mil­lion in tax­payer funds to renovate Philips Arena.

The war of words started when Woolard, the first openly LGBT mem­ber of the At­lanta City Coun­cil and its first-ever LGBT pres­i­dent, crit­i­cized Reed fol­low­ing a Chan­nel 2 in­ves­ti­ga­tion re­veal­ing that Reed of­ten uses emer­gency lights and sirens as he trav­els to non-emer­gency events around the city.

“We have to go back to the premise of the law. Elected of­fi­cials can’t use blue lights and sirens un­less it’s an emer­gency,” Woolard told Chan­nel 2. “It’s a big ex­am­ple of the kinds of things peo­ple look at and say, ‘ Hmmm, govern­ment is not work­ing. We’ve got elected of­fi­cials who are zoom­ing through traf­fic that is clearly il­le­gal, it’s dan­ger­ous. Why shouldn’t I be able to do that?’”
