Owner of At­lanta gay bar Os­car’s dies at 65

Ed­ward J. Ak­ers, owner of Mid­town At­lanta gay bar Os­car’s, passed away on May 10 at the age of 65.

Ak­ers is sur­vived by his part­ner of 19 years, Chris McDon­ald, who co-owns the pop­u­lar Ans­ley Square bar.

“The Os­car’s fam­ily is hurt­ing to­day. We have lost one of our own in the early morn­ing hours. Ed has passed on to a bet­ter place,” a mes­sage posted on the bar’s Face­book page said on the day of Ak­ers’ death, lead­ing to nu­mer­ous tributes form cus­tomers, fam­ily and friends.

“A lovely man who lit up the room when he en­tered,” one read.

“Ed was such a sweet man with a great per­son­al­ity to match,” read an­other.

“This man never failed to greet me with a hug and a smile,” read an­other, echo­ing sim­i­lar sen­ti­ments through­out the thread.

A me­mo­rial ser­vice was held at the bar on May 20.
