THE ULTIMATE ISLAND SHOP

An emporium chock-full of surprising merchandise at every corner

- BY PATRICIA LETAKIS

Suncatchers’ Dream is the kind of store you can spend hours browsing and buying. Tucked in the Olde Sanibel Shoppes plaza where Periwinkle Way meets Tarpon Bay Road, it’s a cozy emporium brimming with irresistible items that make great souvenirs and gifts for friends, family and grandkids. If you’re looking to take a piece of the islands home with you, then this is the place to shop.

The store has several photography and artwork collections that capture the natural beauty of Sanibel and Captiva. Mounted photos and giclée prints by local photographers and artists showcase fiery sunsets, shell-covered beaches and the Sanibel lighthouse, along with the island’s roseate spoonbills, frolicking dolphins and bathing beauties. Magnets, mugs and coasters are embellished with photos that will remind you of your visit. And the coffee table book Sanibel Moonscapes by photographer Angelika Geerlof combines poetry and photos to tell the Sanibel story.

For something a bit funky, consider the hand-painted coconut postcards by Laura Ball. She paints colorful seashells, palm trees and hibiscus flowers on the husk. You can actually mail the coconut to a friend.

If warm sands are part of your memory, Suncatchers’ Dream has sand ornaments shaped to resemble starfish, dragonflies, anchors and scuba divers. There are also coasters that resemble sand and are embellished with shapes of manatees, dolphins and wading birds.

Those in search of jewelry will love the Dune Jewelry collection, which is designed to preserve your memories by using sand and natural elements from the beach or a hiking trail. The Blue collection of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings features larimar stones, the color of water. Exquisitely incorporated into the design, the stone will bring seaside memories to mind whenever you wear the piece. “The Dune Jewelry is my No. 1 seller,” says owner Daniel Moore Thompson, whose dream was to create a shop that surprises customers with great merchandise at every turn.

The store also has a large selection of greeting cards with clever sayings and artwork, and bath products in scents like banana-pineapple and eucalyptus-thyme.

When shopping for grandkids, you’ll find children’s books about the area’s nature with titles like Dolphin Discovery, Manatee Magic and Turtle Tracks. Cute stuffed animals and dolls—manatees, turtles, dolphins and mermaids—are on display.

No doubt, the choices are endless at Suncatchers’ Dream.
