Abortion is a crime
To the editor:
Earlier, my thoughts on Abington Hospital abortions were printed in the Chronicle. A reader, Mr. Burrows, has responded, but in an attack on me and the Catholic Church. I appreciate his predicament? How does one defend abortion — a crime which scars a woman and takes the life of an innocent child?
While I did not identify my faith or write of it, Mr. Burrows determined that I am a Catholic. He is correct, and I would delight in covering it in the future. But to stay on point, it is science which has unraveled the incredible process of human conception and proclaimed that it is the beginning of human life. Complaining about the Catholic Church cannot change this reality. As Planned Parenthood stated in 1965, “Abortion kills the life of your baby after it has begun. It is dangerous to your life and health. It may make you sterile, so that when you want a child, you cannot have it.” J.P. Stanton Jenkintown ing t he Chick-fil-A flap stated that Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy “supports Christian values and lives by biblical teachings.” What is true is that Cathy lives by his interpretation of Christian values and his interpretation of biblical teachings. There is wide disagreement among Christians as t o what it means to be Christian and what the Bible seeks to teach. Cathy goes on to say he is proud that “they” are all married to their first wives. He clearly sees himself as superior t o people who are divorced, single, GLBTn and who knows who else?
The greatest problem with Chick-fil-A, which is more than enough reason for a boycott, are the millions of dollars Cathy has given to anti-gay causes. While the company welcomes all families to its fast-food outlets (no surprise with profits being the motivator there) behind the scenes it is actively working to deny fundamental rights to same-sex families and GLBTn individuals who want nothing more than to share fully in the American dream. That is what is most disturbing.
If the views Cathy stated and the money he had contributed had been to support white supremacist or neo-Nazi organizations, your editorial would have not been so dismissive of the “flap.” Anti-gay groups are hate groups just the same. Marguerite Sexton
