Cheltenham student murdered
A Cheltenham High School junior was murdered Friday night near the Finley playground in the East Mount Airy section of Philadelphia.
Paris Talbert, 17, of Lynnewood Gardens in Elkins Park, was shot once in the abdomen around 11 p.m. Sept. 7 in the 1000 block of East Hortter Street, according to Philadelphia police Officer Tanya Little. He was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, she said.
A motive for the shooting was unknown, Little said.
Little said Monday afternoon a Philadelphia man had been taken into custody in connec- tion with the shooting, but no charges had yet been filed.
Cheltenham High School Principal Andrew Kuhn notified staff of the fatal shooting at an early morning meeting Monday and counselors were at the school to provide one-on-one and group sessions for students, according to Susan O’Grady, district director of communications and development. Tuesday night’s school board meeting began with a minute of silence “out of respect for Paris and his family,” she said.
In addition, Superintendent Dr. Darlene Davis was “reaching out to community leaders where the incident occurred,” O’Grady said, in regard to the relationship between the two neighborhoods. “We are concerned when any child is tragically hurt,” she said.
