Chel­tenham stu­dent mur­dered

A Chel­tenham High School ju­nior was mur­dered Fri­day night near the Fin­ley play­ground in the East Mount Airy sec­tion of Philadel­phia.

Paris Talbert, 17, of Lyn­newood Gar­dens in Elkins Park, was shot once in the ab­domen around 11 p.m. Sept. 7 in the 1000 block of East Hort­ter Street, ac­cord­ing to Philadel­phia po­lice Of­fi­cer Tanya Lit­tle. He was taken to Al­bert Ein­stein Med­i­cal Cen­ter, where he was pro­nounced dead at 12:15 a.m. Satur­day, she said.

A mo­tive for the shoot­ing was un­known, Lit­tle said.

Lit­tle said Mon­day af­ter­noon a Philadel­phia man had been taken into cus­tody in con­nec- tion with the shoot­ing, but no charges had yet been filed.

Chel­tenham High School Prin­ci­pal An­drew Kuhn no­ti­fied staff of the fatal shoot­ing at an early morn­ing meet­ing Mon­day and coun­selors were at the school to pro­vide one-on-one and group ses­sions for students, ac­cord­ing to Su­san O’Grady, dis­trict di­rec­tor of com­mu­ni­ca­tions and de­vel­op­ment. Tues­day night’s school board meet­ing be­gan with a minute of si­lence “out of re­spect for Paris and his fam­ily,” she said.

In ad­di­tion, Su­per­in­ten­dent Dr. Dar­lene Davis was “reach­ing out to community lead­ers where the in­ci­dent oc­curred,” O’Grady said, in re­gard to the re­la­tion­ship be­tween the two neigh­bor­hoods. “We are con­cerned when any child is trag­i­cally hurt,” she said.
