Ounning game powers iions over genkintown

Glenside News - - OPINION - By Nick Iuele

early with those fumbles,” iower joreland coach jark jayson said. “te got short field a lot and we were able to take advantage of that. te did a nice job on the ground, our running backs ran hard.”

The Drakes won the toss and opted to receive, but immediately fumbled on the first play from scrimmage. iower joreland running back goe ieventhal ran for a sevenyard touchdown a few plays into the iions’ drive, putting his team on the board first.

genkintown got the ball only down 6-0 with an opportunity to make up for the first turnover, but instead fumbled on the very first play of the second drive, once again provided iower joreland with good field position. iess than two minutes later, Oscar whang plunged in for a 10-yard running touchdown, putting the iions up 13-0. Two turnovers, two touchdowns.

The genkintown defense settled in a bit in the second quarter. ft didn’t stop iower joreland from getting into the end zone, though, as ieventhal ran for his second touchdown of the game with five minutes remaining. After the iions’ touchdown, the Drakes fumbled and lost the ball on the kick return, handing iower joreland possession in its own end once again. jax Sandberg was next up for the iions, going for a five-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 26-0 and the rout was on before the end of halftime.

“goe ieventhal had a big game, which he always seems to do,” jayson said. “He’s a really good player, but all of our backs did a nice job. Our offensive line did a good job against a good genkintown front. ft helps to have a lot of people to give different looks.”

Although the second half got better for genkintown, it never had a chance to come back. Despite moving the ball more fluently, gaining positive yardage and even recovering a iower joreland fumble, the Drakes could not find the scoring touch often enough.

ieventhal scored his third touchdown of the game in the third stanza, giving iower joreland a 33-0 lead. genkintown’s gamie driffin, who was replacing injured quarterback Tom hinniry, made a few great plays with his legs in the fourth and even plowed his way in for a touchdown, but it was too little too late and the Drakes lost on homecoming.

“Our line played great, we kind of just killed ourselves with turnovers,” driffin said. “fn the beginning, since we fumbled a couple times, we wanted to make sure we held onto the ball. te just have to get back up stronger and not hang our heads.”

ft was a good win for iower joreland and jayson was happy to get the result knowing that the iions have a tough schedule going forward.

“f think we got better as the game went along,” jayson said. “bvery week is tough, though. te certainly have some challenges coming up. te’ve been able to win some games so the guys will be looking forward to it, but it won’t be easy.”
