Central Oregon Golf In Summer Can’t Be Beat

Golf Today Northwest - - News - by CAMERO ON HEALEY

Taking a trip to Central Oregon to play golf during the summer months is a sure bet for most. Let's face it, the area is blessed with a ridiculous number of superb quality golf courses that offer golfers everything from links-style golf (think David Mclay Kidd's Tetherow) to alpine tracks that route beautifully among some of Central Oregon's mountain ranges (think Black Butte Ranch Resort). Golf rates run the gamut from average to premium cost during the high season. But with relatively uncrowded fairways, the prospect of teeing it up in Bend followed by the prospect of brews, mountain biking, horse riding, or hiking (if that turns your crank) should be enough to have you pulling out your Pacific Northwest road map and circling “Bend, Oregon” with your sharpie. In fact, we're going to help you with your planning this month by giving you a taste of some of the area's best golf resorts in this month's feature story titled, “Bend, A Golf Getaway So Close to Home” written by Portland-native Deston Nokes.

Also, this month, we interview new Boeing Classic Tournament Director Brian Flajole. Brian was interviewed recently by Craig Smith as he prepares to take over the helm from previous long-time tournament director Michelle Delancy who was let go late last year. What can fans expect in 2017 from arguably the region's premier professional golf event? And, what about Freddie “Boom Boom” Couples chances this year. You'll just have to read on! At the time of this writing Freddie had just won the American Family Insurance event in Wisconsin, so he's clearly in form. I sure hope we get to see a healthy Couples walking the fairways at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge in late August. In addition, we look at the benefits of playing with a set of clubs that are custom fit. Contributor and Golf Digest Top 100 Fitter Eric Hambleton offers some great perspectives on the importance of keeping an open mind when considering a professional fitting. You may regard yourself as a ‘Callaway or Taylormade guy', but Eric suggests that it's smart to consider that you may have a golf bag filled with clubs from multiple manufacturers. Why? Improved golf performance and lower scores come in all shapes and sizes, right? Let's not forget about the future stars of our game? This month, we introduce you to Oregonian junior golfer Cameron Schultz of Brookings, Ore. who just so happens to carry a 5.2 handicap. Asked what his favorite Pacific Northwest golf course is, his reply? Bandon Crossings. Good choice, indeed! Thanks for allowing us to feature you this month, Cameron! Please enjoy this month's issue and consider sharing with your golfing friends! If you have a story idea or just want to tell us about your recent low round, ace, or other golf-related story, please drop me a line! Cheers!
