As the oldest course in the western United States, Gearhart Golf Links was not simply present at the creation of American golf, it participated in golf’s transformation from a curious hobby for a handful of enthusiasts to a pastime enjoyed by millions. Formed by waves and wind, the dunes corrugate across the surface, establishing mounds and swales perfect for a golf ball’s rolls and bounces. As with most early links, Gearhart was not so much designed as it was detected, with patches of green in low-lying areas designated as putting surfaces, and tees placed accordingly. Gearhart is roughhewn, organic, and charming, nestled in the dunes between Oregon’s Coast Range and the Pacific Ocean.
