Gun World - - Contents - By Richard Schutz

2017 has seen a lot of upgrades and variations of existing models—as well as a few completely new guns.

In these troubled times, the need for self-defense has become more critical than ever. Indeed, now that most states have enacted a CCW law and reciprocity between states is increasing, more and more civilians are “packing heat.”

Nearly 65,000 industry professionals attended the 2017 SHOT (Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade) Show this past January at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. This annual event gives distributors, dealers and the media an opportunity to see and handle a plethora of products both new and familiar.

For those of us interested in firearms, the SHOT Show provided a vast array of firearms to peruse. The day before SHOT Show began, Industry Day at the Range offered a chance to shoot some of those firearms. The SHOT Show is so large that it is nearly impossible to see everything on display, but it is a great opportunity to keep abreast of what is happening in the firearms industry.

Some firearms, such as the Hudson H9, are innovative. Others are new but don’t break any new ground. Still others are merely line extensions of existing models.

The following firearms are those that we found most interesting—even if they weren’t totally new for the 2017 SHOT Show. GW

Even though it was introduced late in 2016, the CZ P-10 C (“compact”) was one of the hottest firearms at the 2017 SHOT Show. From its ergonomics to its 4.5- to 5-pound trigger (with stirrup-style trigger bar), fiber-reinforced frame, nitride-treated, cold hammer-forged barrel and slide, and its tactical 3-dot sights, this all-new line of striker-fired pistols is CZ through and through. The P-10 C model is chambered in both 9mm Luger and .40 S&W. Safeties include both trigger and a firing pin block. There is no manual safety. Takedown is similar to that of other striker-fired pistols. The P-10 C fits many holsters designed for the Glock 19.

The all-new 9mm Hudson H9 pistol was a real head-turner and won the Gun Collective Best in Show award at the SHOT Show. Some refer to the H9 as the “love child” of Glock and 1911 parents. The H9 offers a low bore axis, a 1911-styled, straight-pull trigger with an integral safety and a double-stack magazine for 15+1 capacity. It is striker fired and does not have a grip safety. The pistol also features a stainless steel slide, steel frame, ambidextrous slide stop, reversible magazine catch, Trijicon HD front sight, VZ grips, Hogue textured lower back strap and a black nitride finish. You will certainly hear a lot more about this pistol in the future.

All new for 2017, the New Hampshire-manufactured

Caracal Enhanced F (EF) striker-fired, polymer-frame pistol is chambered in 9x19mm NATO and features a low-profile slide. We fired two of these pistols during Industry Day at the Range. One had the standard 3-dot sight system with a 6.5-inch sight radius; the other had the Quick-Sight system. They were both easy to shoot well, and we were surprised at how well the Quick-Sight system worked. The “short double-action” trigger was smooth and crisp for a strikerfired pistol. Safeties include an integrated trigger safety, firing pin safety and a drop safety. The barrel is cold hammer forged and has a fully supported chamber. Both the barrel and the slide receive a QPQ salt bath nitriding treatment. We guarantee you will be surprised at how well the Quick-Sight system works after you run through a couple of magazines. (Images included here are of the Enhanced F pre-production pistols. Frame and slide markings, slide configurations and finishes might differ on the serial production run.)

New to the commercial market for 2017, the LWRCI REPR (Rapid Engagement Precision Rifle) MKII was built to meet the demanding requirements of the CSASS (Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System) solicitation by the U.S. Army. This rifle is chambered in 7.62x51 NATO and is available in 12.7-, 16.1- and 20-inch barrel lengths. The REPR MKII features a black nitride-treated, heavy-profile, fluted, cold hammer-forged barrel, tunable gas block with short-stroke gas piston system, Monoforge upper receiver with integrated rail base, removable top rail, fully ambidextrous lower receiver controls, Geissele SSA-E two-stage trigger, LWRCI ambidextrous charging handle, LWRCI skirmish sights, LWRCI muzzle brake and Magpul MOE grip. The models with 12.7- and 16.1-inch barrels have a Magpul UBR buttstock; the 20-inch-barreled model has a Magpul PRS buttstock. All in all, this is a fine rifle that should have no problem providing sub-MOA accuracy.

The Falkor Defense PETRA Magnum MSR is now chambered in .300 NORMA. The PETRA .300 NORMA uses the DRACOS Straight Jacket barrel system. This barrel system comes with a 100 percent money-back guarantee and a lifetime warranty. The PETRA features a hard-anodized, ambidextrous billet receiver (ambidextrous takedown pins, bolt release, short-throw safety selector and Falkor Mach 300 ambi-charging handle), Falkor anti-tilt nitride BCG, Geissele SSA-E two-stage or Trigger-Tech trigger, Magpul PRS buttstock, Hogue overmolded grip, Falkor DS-300 muzzle brake and a Falkor “Tranny” free-float, 19-inch M-Lok handguard. The rifle is finished in gray Cerakote. Falkor Defense claims that this semiauto rifle is the “Ferrari” of the magnum semiauto class. It shoots like a bolt gun with virtually no recoil.

Another handgun that took the SHOT Show by storm was the Taurus SPECTRUM. The SPECTRUM is designed, engineered and manufactured in the United States. Along with its ultra-slim design, the colored, soft-touch, overmolded grip panels that are integrated into the grip and the slide make the SPECTRUM stand out in the EDC handgun crowd. Those grip panels appear to provide an ergonomic experience not seen before in a micro handgun. The trigger is a DAO design, and the pull weight is in the 7- to 9-pound range, but a wide trigger helps improve the feel. The sights are minimalist and integrated into the slide. As you might expect from the name, the SPECTRUM is available in 20 (yes, 20!) overmolded panel colors, along with stainless and black stainless slides and black, gray and white frames. These pistols are going to sell like hotcakes.

STAG Arms of New Britain, Connecticut—known for its line of

AR-15 rifles and accessories—announced its entry into the AR-10 arena with the release of the STAG 10 and 10S series of directim pingement gas system rifles. Both models feature forged 7075 aluminum upper and lower receivers with type III hardcoat anodizing, 4150 cmv barrels, single-stage triggers, Hogue grips, VG6 Gamma compensators and Diamond Head VRS-T 308 handguards that use the keymod attachment system. The model 10 has an 18-inch barrel with a rifle-length gas system and a Magpul fixed stock. The model 10S has a 16-inch barrel with a midlength gas system and a Magpul ACS buttstock. Both rifles come with STAG’s lifetime transferable warranty and infinite shot barrel guarantee.

American Defense Manufacturing announced its entry into the 9mm MSR field at the SHOT Show with the UIC-9 carbine. The Universal Improved Carbine (UIC) is an AR-15-style platform. The UIC-9 is available as an 8.5-inch-barreled pistol, 8.5-inch-barreled SBR or a 16-inch-barreled carbine. The upper and lower receivers are both machined from 7075-T6 billet aluminum. The lower receiver is fully ambidextrous. The bolt carrier group has a Melonite QPQ finish and the barrel is nitride finished.

The receivers are finished with type III Teflonimpregnated, hardcoat-anodized black or Cerakote finished in FDE, Stealth Gray, Midnight Bronze or OD Green. The handguard uses the M-Lok attachment system. The furniture is Magpul (MOE grip and SL buttstock), and the charging handle is a BCM gunfighter model.

Well-known for its line of reliable model 500 pump-action shotguns, O.F. Mossberg & Sons announced the 590 Shockwave pump-action shotgun at the 2017 SHOT Show. This six-shot (five plus one) shotgun is classified as fully compliant by the BATFE. As a result, it requires no tax stamp for transfer. It features the Shockwave raptor bird’s head polymer pistol grip, strapped forend, ambidextrous safety, dual extractors, positive steel-to-steel lockup, twin-action bars, a smooth-operating, anti-jam elevator and a clean-out tube magazine cap. The 14-inch barrel has a matte-blue finish, cylinder bore and a gold bead front sight. This compact shotgun could be used for home-defense or as a ranch/farm predator gun. It is short and light enough to strap to a backpack for easy carry while hiking.

Perhaps the biggest news of the SHOT Show was the announcement that the SIG Sauer P320 modular pistol had been selected by the U.S. Army as the winner of the XM17 Modular Handgun System (MHS) contract. Second to that at the SIG booth was the introduction of the next-generation P320: the P320 X series. This series consists of the P320 X FIVE, X Carry and X VTAC. The P320 X VTAC was designed in concert with Kyle E. Lamb, SGM (Retired). All P320 X series pistols feature the enhanced X grip module with extended beavertail, four-sided beveled magwell, improved slide serrations, flat trigger and slide-lightening cuts. The VTAC version adds an FDE-finished stainless steel slide, modified slide catch lever and VTAC (Viking Tactics) day/night sights. The P320 X FIVE is the 5-inch barreled, 21-round competition version; the P320 X Carry is the 3.9-inch barreled, 17-round capacity carry version. (All these versions should be in your local gun shop by the time you read this.)
