Jerry Jones Stands By Prescott

Says Rough Opener Was An Aberration

- By STEFAN STEVENSON Fort Worth Star-Telegram

FRISCO, Texas — Jerry Jones is still on board the Dak Prescott train.

The Dallas Cowboys owner dismissed some of the hand wringing over Prescott’s performance in the season opener against the Carolina Panthers.

Prescott’s accuracy was the source of concern for media and fans because of some poorly thrown passes last week. The theme picked up when Giants safety Landon Collins said New York would force Prescott to beat them. Both teams are looking for their first win Sunday night at AT&T Stadium.

“I have tremendous confidence in Dak, and not just as a response to that particular comment,” Jones said on KRLD/105.3 The Fan. “I feel so good about Sunday. I feel good about our future.”

Jones chalked up Prescott’s performance as one bad outing.

“I don’t want to be trite, but teams have had lost games and have had bad games with the best quarterbacks there’s ever been,” he said. “You can have an outing you want to have back.”

Jones said he likes the team’s prospects with Prescott leading the way. “One of the strengths of our team going in against the Giants and one of the strengths of our team as far as I can see going into the future is Dak Prescott,” he said. “His youth, his complete makeup, his skill set.”

Jones went all in on the third-year quarterback who the Cowboys drafted in the fourth round.

“He gives us a lot of dimensions and he knows how to bring it with those dimensions when that area of the game calls on it. That’s very special,” Jones said. “He will do what it takes to win the ballgame. Does he win them all? No. It wouldn’t be right. It wouldn’t be entertaining. Do I wish it was that way for the Cowboys? You bet. As far as having that guy in that spot, he’s my man on the board.”

Jones also dismissed the notion that the offensive struggles go back to the last five or six weeks of 2017.

“I believe that’s not the accurate portrayal of what Dak is going forward for the next 40 games, or the next game coming up. I don’t see that,” he said.
