Po­lice ar­rest 25 for DUI

Dur­ing the week of Jan. 1-8, Hawaii Is­land po­lice ar­rested 25 mo­torists for driv­ing un­der the in­flu­ence of an in­tox­i­cant. Three of the driv­ers were in­volved in traf­fic ac­ci­dents. Two of the driv­ers were un­der the age of 21.

The num­bers of ar­rests by dis­trict were: Kona, 10; Puna, nine; and South Hilo, six.

So far this year, there have been 25 DUI ar­rests com­pared to 21 dur­ing the same pe­riod last year, an in­crease of 19 per­cent.

There have been 26 ma­jor ac­ci­dents so far this year com­pared to 31 dur­ing the same pe­riod last year, a de­crease of 16.1 per­cent.

So far this year, there have been two fa­tal crashes on Hawaii Is­land, re­sult­ing in two fa­tal­i­ties, com­pared to no fa­tal crashes dur­ing the same pe­riod last year.

DUI road­blocks and pa­trols will con­tinue is­land­wide, po­lice said.
