Po­lice ar­rest 24 for DUI

Dur­ing the week of April 10-16, Hawaii Is­land po­lice ar­rested 24 mo­torists for DUI. Six of the driv­ers were in­volved in a traf­fic ac­ci­dent. One of the driv­ers was un­der the age of 21.

The num­bers of ar­rests by dis­trict were: Puna 12; Kona, seven; South Hilo, three; Ha­makua and South Ko­hala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 367 DUI ar­rests com­pared to 318 dur­ing the same pe­riod last year, an in­crease of 15.4 per­cent.

There have been 386 ma­jor ac­ci­dents so far this year com­pared to 435 dur­ing the same pe­riod last year, a de­crease of 11.3 per­cent.

To date, there have been seven of­fi­cial traf­fic fa­tal­i­ties, com­pared to eight fa­tal­i­ties at the same time last year. That rep­re­sents an in­crease of 14 per­cent.

There have also been three fa­tal­i­ties that po­lice don’t count to­ward the of­fi­cial to­tal since two oc­curred on pri­vate prop­erty and the other in Hawaii Vol­ca­noes Na­tional Park.

DUI road­blocks and pa­trols will con­tinue is­land­wide, po­lice said.
