17 mo­torists ar­rested for DUI

Dur­ing the week of Aug. 21-27, Hawaii Is­land po­lice ar­rested 17 mo­torists for DUI.

Six of the driv­ers were in­volved in traf­fic ac­ci­dents.

One was younger than 21.

The num­bers of ar­rests by dis­trict were:

• Puna, nine.

• Kona, seven.

• South Ko­hala, one.

So far this year, there have been 744 DUI ar­rests com­pared to 685 dur­ing the same pe­riod last year, an in­crease of 8.6 per­cent.

There have been 860 ma­jor ac­ci­dents so far this year com­pared with 934 dur­ing the same pe­riod last year. That’s a de­crease of 7.9 per­cent in ma­jor ac­ci­dents.

To date, there have been 25 of­fi­cial fa­tal­i­ties com­pared to 16 dur­ing the same pe­riod last year, an in­crease of 56.3 per­cent.

There also have been four ve­hi­cle-re­lated deaths po­lice don’t count to­ward the of­fi­cial to­tal be­cause two oc­curred on pri­vate prop­erty and two in Hawaii Vol­ca­noes Na­tional Park.

DUI road­blocks and pa­trols will con­tinue is­land­wide, po­lice said.
