Lec­ture, film to fo­cus on sun­screen pol­lu­tion

A free pre­sen­ta­tion about sun­screen pol­lu­tion is sched­uled for 6 p.m. today at the Nat­u­ral En­ergy Lab­o­ra­tory Hawaii Au­thor­ity Vis­i­tors Gate­way Cen­ter, 73-4485 Kahili­hili St. in Kailua-Kona.

Craig Downs will present “Sun­screen Pol­lu­tion and the Threat to Hawaii’s Coral Reefs.”

Downs is ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor of the Haereti­cus En­vi­ron­men­tal Lab­o­ra­tory in Vir­ginia and an ex­pert in en­vi­ron­men­tal foren­sics and eco­tox­i­col­ogy.

In a fol­low-up to the lec­ture, the film “Reefs at Risk” will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Satur­day at Kalani Re­treat Cen­ter, 12-6860 Kala­pana-Kapoho Road in Pa­hoa, along with the movie “Aloha from Lava­land.”

A “sun­screen swap” also will be con­ducted that night. Bring a con­ven­tional sun­screen prod­uct and or­ga­niz­ers will swap it for a “reef-safe prod­uct” for free.

Tick­ets are $5 at the door. The film also can be viewed on­line at www.Reef­sAtRisk.org.
