MAKE- A-WISH HAWAII AND PHILPOTTS INTERIORS RECENTLY COLLABORATED TO CUSTOM DESIGN A bedroom to grant the wish of Taylor, a 15- year- old Mililani girl suffering from a seizure disorder, lung disease and severe autism. Because of her disabilities, Taylor is completely non- verbal and has limited vision. Due to her medical conditions, she is highly sensory and gets enjoyment from movement, touch and the vibrations of sound. Th ese sensory experiences became a driving force behind the design of Taylor's room.

In Taylor's original room, she would find comfort in her rocking chair, which was placed in her bedroom closet. Taylor's family noted that she would head straight to her rocking chair when she got home from school, rocking for hours on end. Th e problem was that this space laced airflow and adequate light.

When it came time for Taylor's wish, it was clear that creating a sensory room “safe haven” for her would be a major part of the renovation's focus.

To create space for the custom modifi cations, the team creatively moved all of the extraneous items in the closet out into the main bedroom's newly installed, custom built- in cabinetry. Within the now- spacious closet, the team designed a sensory room with incredible light features and textured walls handcrafted to meet Taylor's needs. The team also installed a louvered closet door and ceiling fan to increase air circulation and cooling.

Taylor's room is shared with her Grandmother who acts as her primary care taker. Because of Taylor's conditions, quick and easy access to her medication was crucial. Th e team installed customdesigned cabinetry with a built- in refrigerator next to her bed in order to provide additional storage space and provide immediate access to her medication.

It has been an honor for Make- AWish Hawaii and Philpotts Interiors to grant Taylor's one true wish. Th is project would not have been possible without the generous donations of Philpotts' product reps, and their associated companies.
