Tank tops and essential oils help Teddi McEwen transition from the gym

Teddi McEwen

>> Occupation: Fitness instructor, mother of three >> Residence: Kailua

As a fitness instructor and a mom, Teddi McEwen is active by trade and on the homefront. She starts her day at 5:45 a.m. with 15 minutes of meditation before making breakfast, packing lunches and getting the kids off to school (daughter Kiana is an eighth-grader, son Kody is in high school and older daughter Kelsey just moved away for college). McEwen then slips seamlessly into the roll of fitness instructor.

In addition to teaching classes in vinyasa yoga and Zumba at 24 Hour Fitness in Kaneohe, McEwen can be found several times a week leading a class of her own design called Zumba & Zen — a fusion of power and fitness dance — at Kalama Beach Park in Kailua. She also is the instructor for a private Aqua Zumba class Thursday mornings for “a great group of ladies.”

In her downtime, McEwen runs on the beach with her husband, Kane, and surfs with Kiana.

Given her active lifestyle and commitment to wellness, she favors sleek and comfortable styles featuring breathable fabrics that can transition from athletics to mom duties and are cool enough for Kailua summers. After her workouts, McEwen refreshes with a spritz of essential oil blends and purified water.

McEwen touched base via email to fill us in on her go-to goods.

Fitness favorites: “Teeki leggings, Pualani bathing suit top and a loose tank. Sometimes if it gets too hot, layers have to come off, so the bathing suit top keeps things functional and fashionable during a workout.”

Post-gym refresher: “Essential oils help me shift from adrenaline mode to focused, mommy mode. Peppermint, basil and lavender are my favorites and I carry them with me all the time. … It really helps me get through my day.”

Favorite outfit for a night out: “A cute romper with wedges. My favorite one came from the Mahina boutique in Kailua.”

Heels? “No, I love slippahs! But wedges are what I wear for a night out. They give you a little bit of height but you can still walk in them.”

Wardrobe MVP: “I’d have to say my tank tops. I layer them and that works well. A light cardigan on top really makes the look. I also really love my lotus necklace from Ocean Queen in Haleiwa.”

Summer style: “Pualani bathing suits layered under a loose tank. I’m on or around the water so much it just makes sense to be in a bathing suit.

“My Pualani bathing suits are my one article of clothing that I can’t live without. I love how they are made. They last a long time with daily, sun, surf, sweat.”
