2 NAIROBI, KENYA >> At least 34 refugees who had fled political violence in Burundi were killed by government forces in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, a civil society group said Saturday.

A Congolese government spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment, and the number of deaths and other details about the episode could not be independently verified.

The events occurred Friday afternoon in Kamanyola in eastern Congo when a group of Burundian refugees went to an office of the Congolese intelligence service to demand information about several other refugees who had been detained, said Jean-Chrysostome Kijana, a member of the civil society group, which is based in Congo.
