Pausing for a pic with the trophy queen during the Denver stop of the ’55 Drag Safari.
If you’ve read through this month’s “Backstage Past” installment, you saw E. Rick Mann draped with all kinds of camera gear—much of it belonging to Bob D’olivo, as it turns out—for a 1958 HOT ROD subscription ad.
This photo, from the 1955 NHRA Drag Safari stop in Denver over the Fourth of July weekend, illustrates the amount of gear Rickman actually toted around at an event. It’s not a light load by any means: There’s a twin-lens reflex camera hung around his neck, what looks like a movie camera in his right hand, and a flash unit stuck in his back pocket. That doesn’t include the camera he handed to someone to get this photo of him posing with the trophy queen for the Denver race, Mary Saunders. —DREW HARDIN
