July 1978 (116 pages, $1.25): Photo Editor Bob McClurg got in front of Phil Cool’s Deuce highboy to create one of HRM’s coolest covers ever. We made 17 passes at Orange County International Raceway in DKM’s Macho T/A and clocked 14.29 one day before witnessing a comparable, four-speed Trans Am run 15.20s at the same strip (“the best performance we’ve seen all year from a stock 1978 automobile”). On his way to Motor Trend, outgoing veteran Jim McCraw revealed how a turbocharger had upped the output of Ford’s lowly 2.3L four by nearly half (101 to 147 gross horsepower). The cover-blurbed buyer’s guide ranged from Scarab Z-car conversions and Hooker’s V8 Vega to the all-aftermarket Gratiot track roadster and Arntz Cobra.
