UH claims AAC swimming, diving title

-

The University of Houston captured its first swimming and diving championship in school history Saturday night.

The Cougars won the American Athletic Conference title with 772 points, ahead of threetime defending champion SMU (676). A school known for having Olympic diving medalists, the Cougars finally added the elusive team title in the 42nd year of the program.

The Cougars seized control on day 3 of the meet and never looked back on the strength of three individual conference titles — Laura Laderoute in the 200 individual medley, Peyton Kondis in the 100 breast stroke and Micaela Bouter on the 3-meter dive — and nine school records.

Just two years ago the Cougars had only one medalist and two members advance to the finals. The program made strides a year ago, finishing third in coach Ryan Wochomurka’s first season.

Wochomurka was named AAC coach of the year, and Bob Gunter was selected co-diving coach of the year.

Bouter was the league’s diver of the year.
