Major update at Heights Towers
Houston Heights Towers, an eight-story seniors housing project on 19th Street in the Heights that was constructed in 1975, has a fresh look after a $12 million renovation from top to bottom.
Officials, including Mayor Sylvester Turner, rededicated the facility at a ceremony Thursday at 330 W. 19th.
The three-year project, funded by a $10 Community Development Block Grant from the city Housing and Community Development Department and a $2 million loan from Community Bank of Texas, gave new flooring, appliances and bathroom fixtures to all 223 units.
Other work included converting the cafeteria to a community room, adding a computer room, resurfacing and painting the exterior, new plumbing, insulation and fresh landscaping.
The project serves low- to moderate-income seniors age 62 and up.
The renovation was designed by Jim Gwin Architects and built by Comanche Contractors.
Houston Heights Towers was developed by a consortium led by Heights Presbyterian, St. Andrew’s Episcopal, Heights Christian Church and All Saints Catholic.
Houston Housing Management Corp., a subsidiary of the Housing Corp., has managed the property since its inception.
