El Paso officer argued with wife as baby drowned
An El Paso officer argued with his wife on the phone as his baby drowned in an overflowing bathtub last month, police said.
Raymond Licon Jr., 27, was arrested Monday on a charge of criminal negligent homicide, the El Paso Times reports.
Licon was upstairs in his apartment bathing his son, 11-month-old Azrael Ezekiel Licon, on June 20 when he started arguing with his wife over text messages and at some point left Azrael alone, according to an affidavit.
The couple, who are separated, continued the argument over a 45-minute phone call.
“In the course of the text messages and voice call, the defendant forgot about the victim, whom he left in the second-floor bathtub with the water running,” the affidavit states.
The tub reportedly started to flood the bathroom, leaking through to the first floor.
When Licon found Azrael unresponsive in the water, he called 911 and started CPR, but his son was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Licon, who has been relieved of his duties, told investigators that he blamed himself for his son’s death, the affidavit states.
