Atkins, No. 7 UT turn back Kansas

AUSTIN — Ariel Atkins scored 22 points, including 10 in the pivotal third quarter, as No. 7 Texas overcame a challenge by unranked Kansas to win 79-62 on Saturday.

Atkins, a senior guard, also grabbed nine rebounds and had a career-best six steals, enabling Texas to maneuver from two points down at halftime to 14 ahead in the third quarter.

Lashann Higgs added 17 points for Texas (14-2, 5-1 Big 12). Sophomore Sug Sutton, making her third start at Texas, scored a career-best 14.

Junior Christalah Lyons led Kansas (11-6, 2-4) with 20 points.

TCU 76, WEST VIRGINIA 74

Amy Okonkwo scored 16 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 3.4 seconds left in overtime, and the Horned Frogs defeated its second straight ranked team, taking down the 15th-ranked Mountainee­rs in Morgantown, W.Va.

Okonkwo, who made a layup with 3.2 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, and Jordan Moore had doubledoub­les for TCU (12-5, 3-3 Big 12), which beat No. 7 Texas on Wednesday. Okonkwo had 12 rebounds, Moore had 17 points and 11 boards, and Toree Thompson had 14 points.

PURDUE 76, IOWA 70

Andreona Keys scored 22 of her career-high 34 points in the second half, and the Boilermake­rs knocked off their second straight ranked opponent, beating the No. 18 Hawkeyes in Iowa City, Iowa.

KANSAS ST. 80 OKLAHOMA ST. 64

Kaylee Page had a career-high six 3-pointers and scored 20 points, Shaelyn Martin and Kayla Goth had double-doubles, and the Wildcats defeated the No. 20 Cowgirls in Manhattan, Kan.

Wendy Knight scored 15 points, but the Owls shot just 26.9 percent on their way to losing the Panthers in Miami. Rice fell to 13-3 and 3-1 in Conference USA.

Brielle Blaire scored 11 points, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Lady Raiders from losing to the Cyclones in Lubbock and falling to 6-11 and 0-6 in the Big 12.

Shakyla Hill scored 24 points, and the Tigers edged the Panthers in overtime at Grambling, La.

Shala Dobbins scored 35 points, and Dominique Newman added 22 to lead Prairie View A&M (4-11, 2-2 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference).

HOUSTON BAPTIST 69 SAM HOUSTON ST. 61

Amanda Johnson scored 19 points, and the Huskies held off the Bearkats in Huntsville.

Sophie Taylor added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists for Houston Baptist (5-10, 1-4 Southland).

Kevyn Ferriera had 15 points to lead Sam Houston State (3-11, 0-5).
