Houston Chronicle - - LIFE TRIBUTES -

Karla McLerran Riddick, 71, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2017 at her home in Conroe, Texas after a brief, courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1945, Karla was the daughter of Margaret Lemmons and Buford Wesley McLerran. She was a graduate of North Dallas High School and the University of Houston and spent years in Human Resources and Office Management.

Karla was a kind and loyal wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be remembered by her infectious laugh, love of Houston professional sports, and amazing southern gravy and scrambled eggs.

She found particular joy in playing bridge and was active in the Glenshire dinner and ladies’ bridge groups in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. After moving to Conroe and retiring, she spent a lot of time at the Bridge Club of Houston (and others), where she further developed her bridge game, achieved Silver Life Master, and forged some wonderful friendships. Karla had bridge on the brain even in her final days (seven no trump!) and enjoyed visits from her bridge friends near and far during some difficult days.

She is survived by her husband, Curtis Riddick, with whom she shared 49 years of marriage; her children Shelley DuVal, Mark DuVal, and Laura Riddick Avery; grandson Jack Avery and son-inlaw Ted Avery; grandchildren Claire and James DuVal and their mother Leslie DuVal McCulloch; siblings Mike and Nema McLerran, and many nieces and nephews.

In true Karla style, she requested a celebration of her life at a Mexican restaurant in Conroe, where friends and family can gather over tacos and remember the good times. Details will be posted on Karla’s Caring Bridge site.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to JJ Watt’s Houston Flood Relief Fund in Karla’s name to help families affected by Hurricane Harvey, rebuild, resettle, and continue forward.
