More foster homes, toys are needed for pets at NRG
While some Hurricane Harvey pets at the Best Friends Animal Society shelter at NRG Arena have been moved into foster or foster-to-adopt homes, there is still need for more help.
Currently, 297 dogs and 28 cats need foster homes. Once the 30day hold to reunite pets with their owners has passed, Best Friends transports animals to partnering rescue groups and shelters.
The Utah-based Best Friends is a no-kill organization that has committed to ensuring each animal at the arena is placed in a home, either in Houston or another city.
The shelter needs dog toys, towels and sheets, either new or clean used ones. Items can be dropped off
daily between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at NRG Arena, Exhibit Hall D.
Here’s what the shelter has done since opening last month: » 1,125 daily walks at the pavilion; » 10,000-plus pounds of food have been distributed to the pets;
» 92 jars of peanut butter have been used for treats;
» More than 10,500 volunteers have helped with the pets;
» 18,000 flyers in English and Spanish have been distributed about the lost pets.
