Higgs leads way for No. 2 Texas; Baylor breezes

AUSTIN — Lashann Higgs scored 18 points, and second-ranked Texas opened its season with a 95-59 victory over Stetson on Sunday.

Senior Brooke McCarty, the Big 12 player of the year last season, scored 14 for Texas. Ariel Atkins, another senior guard, produced a career-best six assists and four steals for the Longhorns. Junior Jordan Hosey added a career-high 13 points and eight rebounds.

BAYLOR 100, COPPIN ST. 54

Kalani Brown had 24 points and 12 rebounds to help the No. 3 Lady Bears coast to an easy victory in Waco.

The double-double was the second in as many games for Baylor’s All-American center, and Lauren Cox just missed one of her own with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Bears (2-0) had five double-digit scorers and shot 61 percent from the floor and 54 percent from 3-point territory.

TEXAS A&M 83 LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE 62

Chennedy Carter scored 18 points, and Arriel Howard had 17 points and 14 rebounds as the No. 20 Aggies overcame a sluggish opening quarter to beat the Ragin’ Cajuns at College Station to advance to the semifinals of the preseason WNIT.

Texas A&M hosts No. 11 Oregon in a semifinal game Thursday.

Louisiana-Lafayette led 19-12 after the first quarter before A&M (2-0) went on a 12-4 run to take a 24-23 lead with a pair of free throws by Danni Williams. Howard’s 3-pointer with 28 seconds left in the half put the Aggies up 3330, and they led the rest of the way.

SOUTH FLORIDA 90 HOUSTON BAPTIST 43

Kitija Laksa scored 26 points to lead the No. 23 Bulls past the Huskies in Tampa, Fla.

Maria Jespersen had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Laura Ferreira had a career-high 15 rebounds to go with 10 points for South Florida (2-0).

Sophie Taylor had 15 points for Houston Baptist, which shot 26 percent from the field and was outrebound­ed 67-38.

TEXAS ST. 87 TEXAS TECH 70

Taeler Deer scored 44 points to lead the Bobcats past the Lady Raiders in Lubbock.

Deer had 25 points in the first half and was 5-of9 on 3-pointers to match the most points scored by an opposing player against Texas Tech.

Jada Terry led the Lady Raiders with 22 points.

CONNECTICU­T 78 STANFORD 53

Crystal Dangerfiel­d scored 24 points, and Katie Lou Samuelson added 21 to help the top-ranked Huskies open their season with a victory over the No. 10 Cardinal in Columbus, Ohio.

Dangerfiel­d, a sophomore making only her seventh collegiate start, ran the offense with a sharpshoot­er’s mentality, dropping in seven 3-pointers and recording four steals.

Stanford (0-2) made only five of 31 shots in the first half and committed 15 turnovers.

LOUISVILLE 95 OHIO ST. 90 (OT)

Asia Durr scored a career-high 47 points, including 13 of her team’s 15 in overtime, to lead the No. 9 Cardinals past the fifth-ranked Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio.

Durr’s jumper with 3:27 remaining in OT and her 3-pointer a possession later put Louisville (2-0) ahead 87-83. She shot 16for-29 from the field and 9-for-16 on 3s.

RICE 88 NORTHERN ARIZONA 83

Nicole Iademarco scored 28 points, Erica Ogwumike had 22, and Wendy Knight added 20 to lead the Owls to victory in Flagstaff, Ariz.
