Mil­i­tary pi­o­neer laid to rest with honor

A cais­son car­ries the cas­ket of Gen. Richard Cava­zos, the Army’s first His­panic four-star gen­eral, on Tues­day at Fort Sam Hous­ton Na­tional Ceme­tery. Cava­zos died Oct. 29 fol­low­ing a long ill­ness. The cas­ket was hand­made by Ron­nie Campsey, a Long Is­land restau­ra­teur who served un­der Cava­zos in Viet­nam. It bears en­grav­ings of the medals Cava­zos earned as a soldier, in­clud­ing two Dis­tin­guished Ser­vice Crosses, a Silver Star with Oak Leaf Clus­ter, Dis­tin­guished Fly­ing Cross and the Pur­ple Heart.
