Military pioneer laid to rest with honor
A caisson carries the casket of Gen. Richard Cavazos, the Army’s first Hispanic four-star general, on Tuesday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Cavazos died Oct. 29 following a long illness. The casket was handmade by Ronnie Campsey, a Long Island restaurateur who served under Cavazos in Vietnam. It bears engravings of the medals Cavazos earned as a soldier, including two Distinguished Service Crosses, a Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart.
