No. 14 Texas A&M comes up just short at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. — Chloe Jackson scored 27 points, Raigyne Louis added 26, and LSU upended No. 14 Texas A&M 80-78 on Sunday.

The Lady Tigers (16-7, 8-4) shot 53 percent in taking down their third Top 25 opponent in their past five games and joined the Aggies (19-7, 8-4) in a fifthplace tie in the Southeaste­rn Conference.

Texas A&M got within 79-78 after a 3-pointer by Danni Williams with 17 seconds left. Louis made a free throw, and LSU got the ball back after Khayla Pointer created a double team on Khaalia Hillsman and forced a jump ball. But a long inbounds pass went awry, and the Aggies got a final chance. Chennedy Carter drove the floor, hounded by Williams, and missed a hurried 3-pointer.

Hillsman scored 23 points, Williams had 21, and Anriel Howard had 13 with 11 rebounds, while Carter, the nation’s leading freshman (21.5 points per game), scored just eight points.

MISSISSIPP­I ST. 74, KENTUCKY 55

Victoria Vivians scored 23 points, and Teaira McCowan had 21 points and 16 rebounds to help the No. 2 Bulldogs beat the Wildcats in Starkville, Miss.

In front of a second straight sellout crowd at Humphrey Coliseum, MSU coach Vic Schaefer defeated Kentucky for the first time in his career. The Bulldogs (26-0, 12-0 Southeaste­rn Conference) had lost 11 straight games in the series before Sunday’s win.

UCLA 71, ARIZONA ST. 63

Jordin Canada scored 16 points, and Lajahna Drummer added 15 to lead the No. 8 Bruins over the 25th-ranked Sun Devils in Los Angeles.

Canada also had 10 assists and scored nine of her points in the fourth quarter to seal the win for UCLA (21-4, 12-2 Pac-12).

TENNESSEE 62, GEORGIA 46

Mercedes Russell reached a milestone and was on the verge of another as the No. 11 Lady Vols dominated the No. 18 Bulldogs in Knoxville, Tenn.

Russell scored 13 points, leaving her one shy of 1,500 for her career, and grabbed 15 rebounds, making her the sixth Tennessee player to reach 1,000 boards.

SOUTH CAROLINA 64, FLORIDA 57

A’ja Wilson scored 22 points, and the No. 7 Gamecocks used a big run spanning the halves to top the Gators in Columbia, S.C.

Before the game, South Carolina announced that guard Lindsey Spann is out for the season with a knee injury.

SOUTH FLORIDA 84, OHIO ST. 65

Kitija Laksa scored a careerhigh 41 points, 18 in a decisive first quarter, and the Bulls went on to defeat the No. 13 Buckeyes in Tampa, Fla.

Maria Jespersen added 20 points and 14 rebounds for South Florida (20-5), which won its fourth straight to reach 20 wins for the sixth straight season. Laia Flores had 11 assists and eight rebounds as the Bulls outrebound­ed Ohio State (20-6) 46-26.

MICHIGAN ST. 66, MICHIGAN 61

Lexi Gussert scored 11 of her 14 points in the first half to help her team build a double-digit lead, and the Spartans held on to beat the No. 21 Wolverines in East Lansing, Mich.

Michigan State (15-11, 5-8 Big Ten) had lost six straight, reeling without one of its best players and a key reserve.

Michigan (20-7, 9-5) has lost three of four, falling out of contention to win a Big Ten title.
