Party of Lincoln
Regarding “GOP needs to move beyond the cult of Trump” (Editorial page, Thursday): U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake’s essay is a moving eulogy by a true conservative for the Republican Party he once knew. As Flake notes, it is no longer even clear what conservatism means now that the formerly conservative Republican Party has become the party of Donald Trump. Instead of being the party of fiscal responsibility and the rule of law, the GOP now truckles to a man who is a race-baiting demagogue, a would-be autocrat and a crackpot conspiracy theorist.
Flake did not add the logical corollary to his argument: Keep voting Democratic. We had a blue wave this year. Make it a blue tsunami in 2020. Only the bitter sting of defeat will force the GOP to return to being a party of ideas instead of the party of one man. Keith M. Parsons, Friendswood
