Aegean Teal is named top color for 2021
Benjamin Moore forecasters cite need for calm, warm tones
Color-trend forecasts so far this year have been one, big collective exhale.
Joining the 2021 Color of the Year announcements is Benjamin Moore, embracing Aegean Teal — a midrange blue- green with gray undertones — as its top color for 2021.
In search of sanctuary, community and a sense of calm, color forecasters are all leaning on warm, midrange tones in their picks for favored colors.
Aegean Teal is part of a 12color palette forecast that includes Atrium White, Muslin, Foggy Morning, Rosy Peach, Beacon Hill Damask, Potters Clay, Chestertown Buff, Amazon Soil, Gray Cashmere, Kingsport Gray and Silhouette.
Andrea Magno, director of color marketing and development at Benjamin Moore, describes Aegean Teal and the rest of the palette as having a “sun-baked quality” that is
warm, versatile and organic.
Other paint and color companies have announced their 2021 Colors of the Year, with Sherwin-Williams picking Urbane Bronze, following its pick of Naval blue for 2020.
PPG opted for a trio of warm colors for 2021: Transcend ( beige with pink undertones), Misty Aqua (watercolor blue) and Big Cypress (rusty terracotta). For 2020, PPG chose Chinese Porcelain, a deep blue.
“We kept coming back to (Aegean Teal),” Magno said of choosing this color. “It had a quality of being balanced, rich in color and with a certain amount of saturation. Then the gray undertone and earthy quality make it so usable in a home environment.”
Magno’s favorite place to use “Aegean Teal” is on millwork and cabinetry but said it would look equally good in a home office, living room or bedroom.
Just as our houses are getting more of a workout during the coronavirus pandemic, serving as our homes, offices, classrooms and gyms, Aegean Teal is flexible, said Hannah Yeo, Benjamin Moore’s color and design manager.
“The color has a strong connection to emotion. We’re drawn to colors that make us feel good,” Yeo said. “We want you to use color to create spaces that enrich your life.”
