HOW HIGH IS THE HIGHEST DRILLING PLATFORM
IN THE WORLD?
It is the highest construction ever to be moved by humans. The gas production platform Troll A off the coast of Norway breaks the records for its 1,149-foot height and its weight of over 750,000 tons. The drilling platform extracts natural gas from the Troll gas field— the biggest find of natural gas in the North Sea. Unlike other platforms of this kind, Troll A was assembled on land and eventually transported in one piece 125 miles across the water in 1996. The platform’s pillars extend around 1,000 feet below the water’s surface. In one of the concrete legs on which Troll A stands there’s an elevator that takes nine minutes to reach the base of the platform on the ocean floor.
