It is the high­est con­struc­tion ever to be moved by hu­mans. The gas pro­duc­tion plat­form Troll A off the coast of Nor­way breaks the records for its 1,149-foot height and its weight of over 750,000 tons. The drilling plat­form ex­tracts nat­u­ral gas from the Troll gas field— the big­gest find of nat­u­ral gas in the North Sea. Un­like other plat­forms of this kind, Troll A was as­sem­bled on land and even­tu­ally trans­ported in one piece 125 miles across the wa­ter in 1996. The plat­form’s pil­lars ex­tend around 1,000 feet be­low the wa­ter’s sur­face. In one of the con­crete legs on which Troll A stands there’s an el­e­va­tor that takes nine min­utes to reach the base of the plat­form on the ocean floor.

The cylin­dri­cal legs of Troll A are made of steel-re­in­forced con­crete. Since the col­umns must be able to with­stand enor­mous wa­ter pres­sure, each was cast in one piece. In or­der for the en­tire struc­ture to re­main sta­ble on the ocean floor, the plat­form has
