No other ac­tion cam­era maker sells more units around the world than Gopro. In 2014, 5.2 mil­lion were sold in the U.S. alone. To­tal sales for that year came to $1.4 bil­lion. The new­est Gopro cam­era, the HERO4, costs around $450 and can be used any­where on Earth— and not only there. Aus­trian BASE jumper Felix Baum­gart­ner was equipped with seven Gopro HERO2 cam­eras when he jumped through the strato­sphere 24 miles above New Mex­ico on Oc­to­ber 14, 2012. One great ad­van­tage of an ac­tion cam­era: A Gopro is barely big­ger than a match­box and its plas­tic cas­ing is both wa­ter- and shock­proof. It’s con­sid­ered un­break­able. How­ever, its users are not. Some ex­treme ath­letes ended up film­ing their own death.
