The em­pire of the wild rab­bits can grow to be­come as large as 30 foot­ball fields. But these small mam­mals, which weigh up to 4.4 pounds and are most ac­tive at dawn and dusk, rarely ven­ture more than 2,000 feet from their home. The sys­tem of bur­rows has a shal­low main en­trance and se­cret en­trances that are dug al­most ver­ti­cally into the ground. So if a rab­bit has to flee, it can sim­ply fall into a hole.
