BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High School football team is determined to win the Imperial Valley League crown this year and inched toward that goal with a 53-6 victory over Palo Verde Valley last week.
Helping the Wildcats in the week six victory was junior running back Michael Moreno.
The 16-year-old has helped the Wildcats carry the ball all season and against the Yellowjackets had 13 carries for 159 with two rushing scores from 24 and 10 yards out.
“It was our homecoming game and we wanted to make the statement that we want to take league this year,” Moreno said.
Moreno said he was looking forward to the running back role since last season, after it was vacated by then-senior Austyn Gutierrez, who was the 2016 IVL Offensive Player of the Year.
“It was big,” Moreno said. “Austyn did a lot of things for us, so I knew I had to step up this year for the team.”
Moreno leads the Wildcats in rushing yards with more than 900 on the season as well as 11 touchdowns.
Moreno also puts in work on defense for Brawley as an inside linebacker and so far has 33 total tackles.
“I like it,” said Moreno of going both ways. “Sometimes it gets a little tiring, but I work through it because the coaches trust me to do it.” My Favorites Athlete Blake Zeleny Pro team Los Angeles Dodgers Class Language Arts
