The paintings on the former border fence will be rescued, said Calle 13 Project leader Thomas Gin.

The artist told La Crónica newspaper the company hired to rehabilitate the fence committed to save the metal sheets containing the mural paintings in order to donate them or sell them to the arts community for a small amount.

The mural is composed by five paintings — Cuauhtémoc Flag, Zapata, Maija Awi Snake, Hope and Justice.

The paintings were made by artists from Germany, Spain, Chile, Italy, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

Gin told the newspaper the goal is to preserve the mural in a manner similar to what the community of Calexico did with the Friendship Olmecan Bracelet.

The Mexicali mural would be exhibited in other communities, Gin said.
