NEGATIVE SPACES GROWN-UP GLITTER

“I really like glitter a lot,” Alexa Chung, 32, says of her affection for glimmering tips. To keep the look from appearing too juvenile, steer clear of covering the entire nail bed in sparkles. Instead, take cues from Alexa and paint nails in a solid hue and add the glitter to just the top (or bottom) half. Think of it as the modern, mature take on a grammar school throwback. Twenty-nine-year-old Emmy Rossum’s nails look complicated, but truth is, it’s a supersimple paint job. First, apply clear or nude polish to nails. It’s important to keep the beds color-free because you don’t want to appear like you’re wearing polish (get it: negative space). Follow with a swipe of black lacquer at the tip and a halfmoon at the base. See, simple! LONG ON STYLE COOL ACCENT

Guys, celebs like Meghan Trainor, 22, don’t actually have bionic nails that are impressively long and perfectly oval. The secret? They’re fake. Yep, stick ’em on, flick ’em off. And the best part — you have all this extra nail bed space to play with polish (like adding a cool black stripe)! Freida Pinto, 31, shows you can have fun with nail flair without committing to 10 artsy tips. Instead, just single out your ring finger for a stand-out design. After painting her nails in red polish, Freida painted two-thirds of her ring finger in white, leaving the top portion red, and let dry. The finishing touch? The bottom third of the nail painted black, which resulted in the striped look. Voilà!
