Will Smith isn’t back but Jeff Gold­blum and Bill Pull­man re­turn — as do aliens! — in this ea­gerly an­tic­i­pated se­quel to the 1996 sci-fi block­buster. (Jessie T. Usher plays the son of Will’s char­ac­ter; Liam Hemsworth also gets in on the ac­tion!)

The Neon De­mon FRI. 6/24, R ★★★✩✩

Elle Fan­ning is the new-in­town It Girl model in­cit­ing jeal­ousy and preda­tory lust in LA in this dark drama from Drive di­rec­tor Ni­co­las Wind­ing Refn. It strikes provoca­tive poses even if its plot is thin­ner than the mod­els.

Free State of Jones FRI. 6/24, R (NOT SCREENED BY DEAD­LINE)

Matthew Mc­conaughey is a poor farmer who joins forces with slaves to lead an armed re­bel­lion against the Con­fed­er­acy dur­ing the Civil War in this his­tor­i­cal ac­tion drama. (Gugu Mbatha-raw plays his wife, an ex-slave.) It’s not your typ­i­cal sum­mer fare.

Wiener-dog FRI. 6/24, R ★★★✩✩

A dachs­hund goes from one dys­func­tional owner to the next in di­rec­tor Todd Solondz’s vi­ciously cruel yet also em­pathic com­edy. Greta Ger­wig plays an adult Dawn Wiener, Heather Matarazzo’s char­ac­ter in Solondz’s high school classic Wel­come to the Doll­house.

TOM CRUISE (Ethan), 53, stars in The Mummy, Mena and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and has plans for both a sixth Mis­sion: Im­pos­si­ble and a se­quel to Top Gun.
