WONDER WOMAN PROTESTED AS BAD ROLE MODEL: SUPER POINT OR SPARE ME?
Bam! Pow! The United Nations is facing backlash after naming Wonder Woman its “Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls” on Oct. 21 in honor of her 75th birthday. As of Oct. 28, a petition asking the U.N. to reconsider its choice of “an overtly sexualized image” had over 14,000 signatures, but Lynda Carter — Wonder Woman’s 1970s TV portrayer — pleaded with protesters to “please embrace” the comic character. Huffed one online commenter, “Could they not see that appointing a sexualized American fictional character would harm the U.N.’S standing in the world?” But another reasoned, “She has been a powerful figure for over 75 years and inspired many women.”
