Bam! Pow! The United Na­tions is fac­ing back­lash af­ter nam­ing Won­der Woman its “Honorary Am­bas­sador for the Em­pow­er­ment of Women and Girls” on Oct. 21 in honor of her 75th birth­day. As of Oct. 28, a pe­ti­tion ask­ing the U.N. to re­con­sider its choice of “an overtly sex­u­al­ized im­age” had over 14,000 sig­na­tures, but Lynda Carter — Won­der Woman’s 1970s TV por­trayer — pleaded with pro­test­ers to “please em­brace” the comic char­ac­ter. Huffed one online com­menter, “Could they not see that ap­point­ing a sex­u­al­ized Amer­i­can fic­tional char­ac­ter would harm the U.N.’S stand­ing in the world?” But an­other rea­soned, “She has been a pow­er­ful fig­ure for over 75 years and in­spired many women.”
