STARS TELL WHERE THEIR LOYALTIES LIE

In Touch (USA) - - Slipups - BY ALEXANDRA MONIR

Harry Potter prequels follows Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to New York, where he tries to contain the magical creatures that accidentally escape from his suitcase. J.K. Rowling’s screenwriting debut is filled with imaginative action and inventive vocabulary. Even if the storytelling takes a backseat to the world-building, it’s still movie magic.

After the death of his older brother, Lee (Casey Affleck) is made sole guardian of his teenage nephew, which results in a reluctant return to his hometown — and the tragic past with his ex-wife (Michelle Williams). Avoiding easy answers for uncomfortable truths, it’s a devastating drama.

A wealthy but unhappily married artist (Amy Adams) revisits her past when her ex-husband (Jake Gyllenhaal) mails her a manuscript of his unpublished novel. Alternating between the past, present and the pulpy plot of the novel (Amy look-alike Isla Fisher appears in the book scenes), director Tom Ford’s drama is a stylish tale of regret and revenge.

Still reeling from the death of her dad, an awkward teen (Hailee Steinfeld) acts out after her popular older brother (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend (Haley Lu Richardson). Hailee convinces as an exasperating, endearing comic character; Hayden Szeto shines as a classmate with a crush on her.

Gus and Jessie almost didn’t make it to their nuptials, which took place in a forest in Seattle and were officiated by their best friend. “I think we have the greatest wedding story ever,” Gus tells In Touch.
