The season four premiere of the hit renovation series Fixer Upper begins with what could be construed as a joking reference to the recent controversy alleging that elements of the show are faked: In the intro, Chip Gaines turns to his wife, Joanna, and says, “What’s your name again? It’s nice to meet you. Casting did a heckuva job making it look we knew each other.” As Chip attempts to put his arm around the mother of his four children, he beckons, “Step in here, hot pants!” as a laughing Joanna ducks, dodging his embrace. And that’s it: The show then goes back to the formula that viewers have grown to love, with the couple showing potential fixer-uppers to Andrew Chapman (a high school math teacher whose bushy beard is greatly admired by Chip) and his wife, Britanny (a nonprofit director), who have a budget of $450,000 — and a desire for a “doggie spa” that ends up having adorable consequences for the Gaines’ household. (Spoiler: Chip brings home two new puppies.) As if the Gaines family needed to get any cuter …

Chip and Joanna stand the heat in this cute kitchen.
