Until their separation, Mel let her daughter, Angel, believe that Stephen was her biological father. The 10-year-old’s father is Eddie Murphy.

Mel put her children’s safety at risk with her addiction to cocaine and alcohol. Mel’s drug use has been witnessed by the family’s nanny, the children and Mel’s therapist, Dr. Charles Sophy. Mel has taken Antabuse, a drug used to treat alcoholism by making you sick as soon as you drink. She’s also taken Vivitrol, used to prevent relapse in opioid addicts and alcoholics.

Stephen denies claims of domestic abuse. He states that he was able to see Madison (his 6-year-old daughter with Mel) and Angel just two days before Mel’s temporary restraining order request was made. (Mel is also mom to Phoenix, 18, from a previous relationship.)

Mel’s temporary restraining order has prevented Stephen from responding to text messages from Angel. He fears it could harm Angel because Stephen is the only father she has ever known.
