Loved ones fear for Heather Locklear after she hits her lowest point yet. Can she be saved?

In Touch (USA) - - Crisisnews -

It just kept getting worse. Less than a week after Heather Locklear was placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold for threatening to kill herself, police arrested the troubled actress at her Thousand Oaks, Calif., home on June 24 for allegedly attacking first responders. In the early evening, worried loved ones had summoned the authorities when Heather reportedly downed tequila and crashed her Porsche on her property. Held overnight and released on $20,000 bail, the star then reportedly overdosed on prescription pills — and was placed on yet another psychiatric hold. “Heather has become a danger to herself,” says a source. “It’s heartbreaking.”

But sadly, it’s not surprising. The 56-year-old — who once was one of the hottest TV stars on the planet with major roles on Dynasty, Melrose Place, Spin City and more — has been on a downward slide ever since she was arrested for a DUI in 2008 (the charge was later dismissed; see box). “Heather has gotten out of control recently,” says the source, who notes

the actress also was arrested in February for allegedly assaulting boyfriend Chris Heisser and police officers during a drunken rage. (Cops also raided her home in March because she allegedly threatened to shoot them.) Insiders say Heather’s problems stem from turning to pills and alcohol to cope with everything from anxiety and depression to the stresses of getting older in Hollywood. “She can’t get a grip on her issues,” says a friend. “She knows she’s lost it all. She keeps asking, ‘How did it get this bad?’”

Even at the height of her career, the LA native had a wild streak — including during her first marriage to hard-partying rocker Tommy Lee. After they split, she married Bon Jovi rocker Richie Sambora and settled into a happy family life with him and their only child, daughter Ava (now 20). But things changed when their 13-year marriage ended in 2007 amid a cheating scandal involving Heather’s former best friend, Denise Richards. (Richie denied cheating on Heather.) Says the source,

“She started to lose her grip.”

Heather found love again with former Melrose Place co-star Jack Wagner, but their one-year engagement ended in 2012 after a series of ugly incidents, including one in which Heather allegedly punched the former soap star. “She hits these emotional roadblocks and drinks to block everything out,” says the friend. Chris’ dad, Peter, previously confirmed to In Touch that her boozing leads to outbursts: “When she drinks a certain amount, she just unloads. She has a very quick temper, and I don’t know that she realizes what she’s doing in that situation.”

That would help explain her attacks on the police — and contractor Chris (who, sources say, has stuck with Heather through her multiple arrests). If there is a silver lining to all this, friends say it’s that Heather is now realizing she needs serious help. “She’s finally being honest about her addictions,” says the friend. “She’s literally begging for help. Heather’s afraid that if she doesn’t get clean and sober this time, she won’t make it. There’s still hope, but time is running out.” ◼
