An Ode to Apps

iPhone Life Magazine - - Editor's Message -

To me, apps are like poetry—artfully created, simple, and elegant. In the digital world, a website is like a sonnet and an app a haiku that’s satisfyingly self-contained and to the point. Companies invest a lot of time and resources into streamlining their offerings into bite-sized mobile software that’s intuitive and convenient for the end user. However, apps don’t always get the credit they deserve, which is why we’ve decided to shower them with appreciation in our dedicated app issue! One of the greatest things about apps is that you don’t have to carve out time in your day to use them; you can check off your to-do items in your downtime, on your way to work, in line for coffee, or during Parks and Recreation commercial breaks. Apps have a way of making even the most tedious tasks strangely enjoyable. Perhaps it’s the reassuring feeling of step-by-step visual guidance or the gratification of controlling the screen with your fingers. While I usually find creating a budget about as fun as trying to stick to one, I’ve somehow fallen in love with budgeting apps. Seeing my income, expenses, and balances color-coded and visually represented makes me feel organized and proactive. For better or worse, apps also mean I don’t have to be as prepared in life. I can order food, arrange a cab, or keep an eye on traffic with a tap of a button. Instead of studying a map before embarking on a trip, I navigate on the fly. When I go the farmers market only to realize I didn’t bring my purse (don’t judge me), I can quickly launch my PayPal app and pay on the spot. We all have our own reasons for loving apps. And even if you don’t yet, you’ll find tons within this issue, which promises to improve your life with apps in key categories, from productivity to travel and everything in between (pg. 36).
