Remembering Christina Grimmie
Weeks after the singer’s tragic death
on June 11, her legacy lives on.
When J-14 first interviewed Christina in April 2011, we knew she was a force to be reckoned with. At the time, Selena Gomez’s stepdad had just begun to manage the N.J. native after seeing her videos on YouTube, and she was opening for Selena’s tour. “I’m so excited,” she said. “If you love what you do and you have people telling you you’ll never make it, you have to push through!”
Fast forward to a few years later and Christina continued to prove her doubters wrong. In 2014, she took part in season six of The Voice, where she finished third and was signed to her coach Adam Levine’s label.
On June 11, 2016, after doing a concert with Before You Exit in Orlando, FL, the 22-year-old was tragically gunned down at her meet-and-greet event. As her loving family, friends and fans slowly pick up the pieces, we know that the music world will have a giant empty hole that Christina once filled. We will miss you, Christina.
“You have to know who you are and embrace it!” Christina told J-14 readers in our first interview. After growing close on in 2014, Adam Levine said he was “absolutely devastated” by Christina’s death. “Every year on her birthday (March 12), I plan on doing five random acts of kindness in her memory, like paying
for someone’s drink at Starbucks.” — Jessica, 14, NY
“Whenever I have a bad day, I’m going to listen to her songs in my room and remember to smile. She taught me
to stay positive, no matter what.” — Stephanie, 15, KS
“I don’t really understand how this really happened,” Selena Gomez said of Christina’s passing. The two had been good friends since 2010.
“I’ll be honoring Christina by performing in my school’s talent show this September. I’ve been too nervous to sing in public before, but she’ll
give me inner strength.” — Liv, 12, TX
“I’m going to make my friends bracelets with Christina’s initials on them. When we wear them, we’ll remember
what she meant to us.” — Hannah, 13, NC
