Born in 1837 in Selkirk­shire in south­ern Scotland, sam­pler maker Ali­son Bath­gate Wat­son stitched her sam­pler at the age of 19. Her sam­pler fea­tures four al­pha­bets, vary­ing bor­ders, a se­lec­tion of crowns, and a scene at the bot­tom with trees, rab­bits and dogs. All are stitched in a rich, vi­brant color pal­ette.
