Girls basketball Kent cagers to travel for regionals
WORTON — Junior point guard Teira Johnson single-handedly defeated St. Michaels on Thursday, scoring 35 points in host Kent County’s 62-27 victory.
It was the regular-season finale for both schools.
The all-underclassman Trojans applied the brakes to a 10-game losing streak and improved their seeding in the Class 1A East Region basketball tournament that begins at the end of the week.
Kent County (5-15) scored all the points it needed before intermission, closing out the first half on an 11-2 run to build an insurmountable 40-14 lead.
Freshman Yasmine Jiggetts’ three-point play with 3 minutes, 1 second remaining in the third quarter gave the Trojans a 30-point lead, 51-21, and started the running clock.
The spread was 57-22 heading into the final frame.
