CHESTERTOWN— Scott Boone, Kent County director of information technology, gave an update on the county’s fiber- optic installation at the Chestertown Council meeting, Tuesday.

Boone said that phase 1 of the project is nearing completion. All town and county installations in Chestertown, Betterton, Galena and Millington are now connected, he said. The project is being paid for by Kent County, and will cost the town nothing.

The next phase for Chestertown will be installing fiber lines for business and residential connections in town neighborhoods.

Town Manager Bill Ingersoll said he and town Utilities Manager Bob Sipes will go over the plans for the installation and work out the best way to avoid cutting other utility lines.

Brett Hill of FTS Fiber, which is doing the installation, said the lines in the downtown area will be laid in the back of buildings to avoid digging up town streets, minimizing disruption of businesses.
