Opportunties to learn about health this fall
The public is invited to a webinar presentation with Dr. Atul Gawande: “Villages: The Value of Community and Choice As We Grow Older,” sponsored by HomePorts.
The presentation will take place at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, upstairs in the Chestertown Town Hall.
Gawande is a renowned surgeon, public health researcher, writer and author of the seminal book “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End,” described by Amazon.com as “riveting, honest, and humane ... showing that the ultimate goal is not a good death but a good life — all the way to the very end, a book that has the potential to change medicine — and lives.”
The discussion, to be viewed by groups across the country, will focus on possibilities in the later years of our lives. The title refers to the Village movement, a phenomenon familiar to many locally because of HomePorts, Kent County’s “Village.”
HomePorts is a membership organization helping older adults continue living safely and comfortably in their own homes. Set up by and for local residents, HomePorts is incorporated as a Maryland nonprofit.
HomePorts resources include a cadre of vetted volunteers and referrals to reliable service providers in the fields of transportation, interior and exterior home and yard maintenance, grocery and household services and personal assistance and trouble shooting.
Although independent, the Village to Village Network provides leadership, education, mentoring and technical support nationally to more than 230 open Villages and an additional 130 plus Villages that are somewhere in the development phase.
HomePorts partners with Upper Shore Aging and University of Maryland Shore Regional Health. It offers financial assistance to those with limited incomes. For more information, call Karen Wright, executive director, at 443-480-0940.
