Trojans mark personal bests at home meet
WORTON — The weather was cold and damp on April 3 and the meet was a little chaotic as it came on the same day as the Trojans returned to school from spring break, but there were personal bests aplenty for the home team. Almost every one of Kent County’s boys established PRs in track or field events, or both, led by Connor Bass (second) and Taekwon Duggins (fourth) in the 200 meters. Corey Robinson had a personal best in the long jump and the “throwers” — Josh Medford, Josh Thompson, Patrick Curran, Brandon Mitzel, Brandon Myers and Giuseppe Gordillo — improved in the shot put and discus events. Also worth noting: Daniel Rickman and Christian Sunkler placed first and third, respectively, in the 800 meters; Rickman headed the 1600 meters; Dan Mitzel, Michael Zappia and Thomas Martinez, placed second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 3200 meters; and Matt Hartman was the runnerup in the shot put. On the girls side, freshman Marlee Berghaus had a break-through meet. She placed second in her debut in the 300-meter hurdles, trailed only classmate Cecilia Llamas in the 800 meters and was third in the 1600 in a personal-best time, totaling 11 team points. Llamas won the 800- and 1600-meter open races and placed second in the long jump with a PR of 12 feet, 5.5 inches. Junior Bethany Heinefield placed fifth in the 200 meters and the 300 hurdles. Deidre Hylton ran a personal best in the 400 meters. Freshman Molly Grafton placed seventh in the 800 meters. This was the only home meet for the Trojans, who hosted athletes from Easton, Colonel Richardson and North Dorchester. Grafton and Jevante Dozier were making their track debuts. Injuries kept them out of the seasonopening meet March 26 at Queen Anne’s. Printed below are complete results for Kent County. Personal bests are denoted in bold.
