Men­tal Ill­ness Aware­ness Week is Oct. 7 to 13

CHESTERTOWN — Dur­ing, Men­tal Ill­ness Aware­ness Week, Oct. 7 to 13, the Na­tional Al­liance on Men­tal Ill­ness Kent and Queen Anne’s seeks to raise pub­lic aware­ness of men­tal ill­ness, and to spread the word about its pro­grams for fam­ily sup­port and ed­u­ca­tion.

NAMI’s Fam­ily Sup­port Group meets on the first and third Mon­day of each month. Early next year, the group will be start­ing a 12-ses­sion course for fam­ily mem­bers of in­di­vid­u­als with se­vere men­tal ill­ness.

Ac­cord­ing to a news re­lease, each year, mil­lions of Amer­i­cans face the re­al­ity of liv­ing with a men­tal health con­di­tion. One in five adults ex­pe­ri­ences men­tal ill­ness prob­lems ev­ery year, and 50 per­cent of chronic men­tal ill­ness be­gins by age 14.
